Please, please, please Remember the Who? What? When? Where? How? Why? Which? The historical context, the language, poetry, idioms of the day, etc...are all important! Think about it!
If Jesus' imminent return and coming a Second Time applied to a First Century audience, relevant to what they would see and experience, how could it repeat indefinitely?
Though much has transpired since the First Century, more recent tribulations have occurred, and they were not quite to be compared to the extreme torture and persecution of Christians by both those who He came unto who didn't receive Him and of the armies which compassed about Jerusalem in a 42 month war (also referenced as a 1260 day war in the Book of Revelation) which happened circa 70 AD. This was recorded by First Century Historian, Josephus, and widely accepted as historically fulfilled!
Joh 14:15-29 If ye love me, keep my commandments. (16) And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; (17) Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. (18) I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you. (19) Yet a little while, and the world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live also. (Peter's first epistle here is addressed to 1st century dispersed/scattered Israelites, and in verse 20 of chapter 1 Peter tells that audience that they were in the last times)
Act 2:16 But this is that which was spoken by the prophet Joel;
Act 2:17 And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams:

Who is the audience of 1 Peter?

1Pe 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which according to his abundant mercy hath begotten us again unto a lively hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,

1Pe 1:5 Who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.
Who is the audience of 2 Peter?

(5) For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water: (6) Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished: (7) But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men. (8) But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. (It's quite obvious that 2 Timothy is very personal and contemporary)

Which last days?
Jas 5:7-12 Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain. (8) Be ye also patient; stablish your hearts: for the coming of the Lord draweth nigh. (9) Grudge not one against another, brethren, lest ye be condemned: behold, the judge standeth before the door. (10) Take, my brethren, the prophets, who have spoken in the name of the Lord, for an example of suffering affliction, and of patience. (11) Behold, we count them happy which endure. Ye have heard of the patience of Job, and have seen the end of the Lord; that the Lord is very pitiful, and of tender mercy. (12) But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.
(These imminence passages illustrate the timeline! Was the coming of the Lord drawing nigh when James wrote this epistle to the twelve tribes scatterred abroad (James 1:1) over and over and over again, repetitively...And, which/how many scattering of the 12 tribes are we dealing with?)
All of this eschatology (basically the study of the end) involves another theme: The Two Covenants! It's very deep and I will only briefly mention it here, for now, as it also the Heaven and Earth relationship and idiom...
Heb 8:6-13 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. (7) For if that first covenant had been faultless, then should no place have been sought for the second. (8) For finding fault with them, he saith, Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah: (9) Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day when I took them by the hand to lead them out of the land of Egypt; because they continued not in my covenant, and I regarded them not, saith the Lord. (10) For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people: (11) And they shall not teach every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the Lord: for all shall know me, from the least to the greatest. (12) For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more. (13) In that he saith, A new covenant, he hath made the first old. Now that which decayeth and waxeth old is ready to vanish away.
(Remember the Timeline above, involving the setting of the Bible History, and an Idiom, "Heaven and Earth," Which represents the Throne and the Footstool. One could call it the Ruling over the Ruled. In the Old Covenant, Jerusalem was a Physical City. In the New Covenant, New Jerusalem is written upon the forehead; The Word of God, Jesus is written on the forehead! Revelation 2:17, 3:12, 14:1, 19:12,13 and Chapter 21...
Rev 21:1-4 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea. (2) And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. (3) And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying, Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be with them, and be their God. (4) And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.

Again, Joel said the last days were occurring as confirmed by Peter with regards to the Prophecy of Joel!
Joel 2:27-32

29 And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

(Peter used this same wording in Acts 2:38,39)
Also, John the Baptist, who was a Prophet, proclaimed that The Kingdom of Heaven WAS at hand-- as Jesus confirmed!
(Please always consider verb tenses and the Timeline of the History described in the Holy Bible, and as you would with any History book!)
Matthew 3:1-3
3 In those days came John the Baptist, preaching in the wilderness of Judaea,
2 And saying, Repent ye: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
3 For this is he that was spoken of by the prophet Esaias, saying, The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.
The Timeline, "Time Statements" and verb tenses with the setting of the History are all very important. The audience relevance must be preserved to understand when and to whom this urgent message was to be directly received! The implications are still important and there is still a Better and Everlasting Covenant Based upon Better Promises which have included a change in the ministry!
Also To Note:
- Jesus answered Pilate that His Kingdom, also The Kingdom of God was not of this world (John 18:36). It is now of the Israel of Heaven. New Jerusalem was and is written upon the foreheads of those filled with the Holy Ghost/Spirit, the Spirit of Christ (He that is joined unto the Lord is One Spirit, from 1 Corinthians 6:17 in it's context of the end of the chapter, and also in 1 Corinthians 12:13). (Also, Ephesians 4:1-7 further explains the Unity of the Spirit).
- If we are Christ's, we reign in Heavenly places with Him, as fellow heirs, One with the Spirit of God! We are souls, vessels and Temples of the Holy Ghost! The Tabernacle of God is with men! (Revelation Chapter 21:1-8, 22, 9-27, and Revelation 22:1-5).
- Daniel 9:24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city (490 years, a day for a year, from the proclamation to go forth and rebuild the temple), to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
- Daniel 12:4 But thou, O Daniel, shut up the words, and seal the book, even to the time of the end: many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall be increased. Daniel 12:9 And he said, Go thy way, Daniel: for the words are closed up and sealed till the time of the end.
- Rev 22:6-21 And he said unto me, These sayings are faithful and true: and the Lord God of the holy prophets sent his angel to shew unto his servants the things which must shortly be done. (7) Behold, I come quickly: blessed is he that keepeth the sayings of the prophecy of this book. (8) And I John saw these things, and heard them. And when I had heard and seen, I fell down to worship before the feet of the angel which shewed me these things. (9) Then saith he unto me, See thou do it not: for I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren the prophets, and of them which keep the sayings of this book: worship God. (10) And he saith unto me, Seal not the sayings of the prophecy of this book: for the time is at hand. (18) For I testify unto every man that heareth the words of the prophecy of this book, If any man shall add unto these things, God shall add unto him the plagues that are written in this book: (19) And if any man shall take away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part out of the book of life, and out of the holy city, and from the things which are written in this book. (20) He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus. (21) The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
